The 22nd Red Sea Jazz Festival in Eilat will be one of the biggest jazz events Israel has ever seen.

The 22nd Red Sea Jazz Festival will take place in Eilat between August 25 and 28. It will be one of the biggest jazz events this country has ever seen, and will mark cofounder and perennial artistic director Danny Gottfried's last time at the helm. Next year, internationally renowned Israeli bassist Avishai Cohen will take over the Red Sea Jazz reins.
The lineup of foreign acts this year is particularly impressive and includes a number of artists who have played Eilat before. Two of the most eagerly awaited performances will be the Oregon gigs on August 26 and 28, which will be the reemergence of one of the most popular jazz-world music crossover bands, founded in 1970.
In other stellar slots are veteran pianist Carlas Bley and her Lost Chord band, Chicago-based vocalist Kurt Elling, high-energy guitarist Mike Stern and his band, a star-studded all-woman quartet led by drummer Terri Lyne Carrington - including pianist Geri Allen who was star of the 2006 Jerusalem Jazz Festival - and a sextet led by trombonist John Fedchock.
As always, the Red Sea jazz bash offers local artists a chance to rub shoulders with some of their better-known colleagues from overseas.
Fittingly, the last day of the festival features a Salute to Danny Gottfried, with Gottfried and his son Aviram sharing pianist duties, Elling on vocals with trumpeter Randy Brecker and saxophonist Bill Evans; the last two will also front their own Soulbop sextet. In addition, Gottfried Sr. will play in another nostalgia-laden show marking 60 years of Israeli music, which will also feature fellow Israeli jazz founders saxophonist Albert Piamenta, bassist Eli Magen and drummer Areleh Kaminsky. Elsewhere in the Israeli section there will be trombonist Avi Lebovich and his orchestra and - unsurprisingly - Avishai Cohen and his trio.
