AG approves Eizenkot's appointment to IDF deputy chief

Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein on Sunday approved the appointment of Maj.-Gen. Gadi Eizenkot to the position of deputy IDF chief of staff, Israel Radio reported.
The proposed appointment, approved last week by Defense Minister Ehud Barak on the recommendation of IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz, had come under criticism due to the timing of the decision, ahead of the upcoming January 22 election.
Weinstein had asked Barak to explain why the appointment was made during election season, which the defense minister did in a letter, arguing that the appointment was essential to the ongoing security of the state.
Eisenkot will replace Maj.-Gen. Yair Naveh, who has held the position since 2010, though the transition date has not yet been set.
