Vera Girich, a former employee of the Israeli embassy in Ukraine, was killed Thursday as a result of a Russian shelling in central Kyiv, Israeli Ambassador to Ukraine Michael Brodsky announced via Twitter.

Girich had worked for leading Ukrainian TV channels before but since February 1, 2018, she had worked for Radio Liberty as a journalist and producer.

She died on April 28 when shelling struck the first and second floors of a 25-story building. Her body was only found under the rubble Friday morning, Radio Liberty reported.

The shelling coincided with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's visit to Kyiv, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky saying Russia's shelling began "immediately" after his meeting with Guterres had ended.

In a statement, Radio Liberty expressed its condolences to Girich's family and vowed to remember her as "a bright and kind person, a true professional."

Girich is one of several journalists to have been killed in Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

This is a developing story.
