Ayalon asks California legislature for Iran sanctions

Deputy Prime Minister Danny Ayalon requested Californian House of Representatives speaker John Perez Wednesday to legislate sanctions that would prohibit the use of California funds for investment in companies that are connected to Iran.

Ayalon specifically requested from the House speaker during their meeting in California that he try to draft a law that would "prohibit insurance companies from investing in companies involved in Iran's economy," according to the deputy prime minister's spokesperson.

He also thanked Perez for a recent law the prohibited investing pension funds in companies with connections to the Iranian oil industry.

Perez told Ayalon that California universities lifted a ban on study abroad programs to Israel, following Ayalon's request to do so in March of this year.

Ayalon "welcomed the progress and thanked the chairman," according to his spokesperson.

Study abroad programs to Israel in California schools were suspended in 2002 due to safety concerns.
