'Dangerous' Syrian terrorist escapes Lebanese prison

A Syrian terrorist belonging to an al-Qaida-inspired group has escaped from Lebanon's largest prison, according to Lebanese security officials. The officials described the suspect as a "dangerous" member of the Fatah Islam group and say a manhunt is under way to find him. They said the Syrian escaped Tuesday from the Roumieh prison east of Beirut but gave no details on how he managed to flee from the high security facility. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military regulations. Fatah Islam fought a three-month battle against the army in northern Lebanon in 2007. The clashes killed 220 militants, 171 soldiers and 47 Palestinian civilians. Dozens of the group's members have been captured and charged in Lebanon in the past two years.
