Thousands of children with disabilities not been recognized by the welfare system may soon be eligible to receive full disability allowance under an agreement reached Thursday by the National Insurance Institute, the Welfare and Social Services Ministry and the Treasury.
According to the deal, which must be approved by the Knesset Labor, Welfare and Health Committee, children with medium to serious mental disabilities, suffering from chronic illnesses that require medical treatment, those with developmental delays and more will be eligible for full disability payouts.
"Under the current system, many families are forced to deal on their own with the financial and emotional burden of caring for children with disabilities," Welfare and Social Services Minister Isaac Herzog said, in a statement.
"This step will be a welcome relief for thousands of families in that situation who have, until now, fallen through the cracks of the welfare system and have waited years to receive any type of assistance."
