Golani soldiers express 'deep regret' over refusing orders

IDF soldiers from the Golani Brigade’s 51st Battalion were sentenced to 20 days’ incarceration on Monday after disobeying orders. The 13 soldiers had refused to secure a base on the Golan Heights after concluding that they had been the victims of unusually harsh and unfair treatment by their commanders. Two soldiers are still absent. The soldiers had complained of being forced to stay on base during free days as a punishment for minor offenses. An army source stated that at no point had the army’s operational readiness been damaged by the incident.
On Tuesday, the IDF Spokesman Office said the soldiers had refused to obey an order given to them, following which the commander of the battalion had launched an inquiry that resulted in a trial and the incarceration sentence.
During the inquiry, the soldiers expressed “deep regret” for their actions, the army stated, adding, “The IDF condemns this type of phenomenon among its soldiers, and they are dealt with as is necessary.” The army source added that the soldiers “have asked to remain on as combat soldiers after fulfilling the punishment.”
