Halachic arbiter: No Crocs on Yom Kippur

Halachic arbiter No Cro

Centenarian Rabbi Shalom Yosef Elyashiv, who is considered the top Ashkenazi haredi arbiter of Jewish law alive today, ruled last week that Crocs sandals cannot be worn on Yom Kippur because they are too comfortable. Elyashiv was asked by one of his students whether it would be a problem to wear the sandals on the holiday in which leather shoes are prohibited due to their comfort. The rabbi responded that it was "not preferable" to wear Crocs, a statement interpreted by his followers as almost prohibiting the sandals. Other top arbiters of Jewish law and Ashkenazi chief rabbi Yonah Metzger have ruled that there was nothing wrong with wearing the sandals on Yom Kippur.
