Independence MKs split on future, set to meet

The four Independence Party Knesset members whose future was left in doubt by their leader Ehud Barak's announcement that he intends to quit politics will meet Wednesday to consider their options.

Barak's number 2 in the party, Industry and Trade Minister Shalom Simhon, spent Tuesday talking to potential suitors for the four MKs, who are each worth a hefty sum in party funding.

MK Einat Wilf wants the party to run in the January 22 election despite Barak's departure, Agriculture Minister Orit Noked would prefer to return to the Labor Party, and Simhon wants to hold out for the best offer.

A source in The Tzipi Livni Party said her decision on which current MKs to welcome would be based on whether they would help her expand the Center-Left bloc.
