'Israeli politics have gone off the rails,' Lapid says

The head of the centrist-secularist Yesh Atid party, Yair Lapid, sought to portray himself on Friday as a politician above the fray in what has been a topsy-turvy week that included the elevation of Yisrael Beytenu chief Avigdor Liberman to the position of defense minister and the departure of Moshe Ya'alon from the political scene.

"What happened to us this week is proof that Israeli politics have gone off the rails," Lapid said upon returning to Israel from a diplomatic trip to the United States.

"Our politicians, from both the Right and the Left, took the most important things in our lives – national security, foreign relations, the foundational elements of Israeli society – and said that they aren't important."

"What is important is what kind of trick they could pull off against one another, which job they'll receive, and which ministerial position they will get."

"This is a firesale of Israeli values," Lapid said.
