'Land Day march to stop short of northern border'

The Lebanese branch of the 36th annual Land Day march to Jerusalem will stop at Beaufort Castle in a bid to avoid clashes with the IDF, sources told the Daily Star on Saturday.

Organizers of the march expect over 30,000 activists to participate in the event.

Land Day has been a day of protests and general strikes in the Arab sector for more than 30 years, and is held to mark the anniversary of the 1976 killing of six Galilee Arabs in clashes over land confiscations.

Last year, A Syrian protesters was killed after hundreds breached the border with Israel. A similar incident along the Lebanese border resulted in the deaths of between three and 10 protesters at the hands of the Lebanese Armed Forces.

Civil demonstrations have been adopted as a central strategy by the Palestinian national movement.
