PA: Goal of state recognition to get Israel back to talks

Palestinian Foreign Mnister Riyad al-Malki said that PA attempts to convince countries to recognize a Palestinian state are a way of creating "an atmosphere that will convince Israel that it is in its interests to come forward and to reengage with us in negotiations."

"We believe that such recognition is a way to pressure Israel, to convince Israel and to make Israel believe that there is another way [open to us] if Israel continues to refrain from engaging Palestinians in direct negotiations," Malki stated in an interview published on the bitterlemons website this week.

Malki said that the decision to turn to Latin America for recognition of a Palestinian state stemmed from the large community of Palestinian expatriates living in those countries and the fact that many of the nations are politically on the left.
