Pro-government candidates win in Bahrain runoffs

MANAMA, Bahrain  — Official results show pro-government candidates have won all nine parliamentary seats up for grabs in Bahrain's runoff elections.
The results announced early Sunday by state media give pro-government Sunni candidates a combined total of 22 seats in the 40-member legislature from two rounds of voting.
They also leave the country's embattled Shiite majority with 18 seats — the same as in the outgoing parliament.
Most of the runoffs Saturday were between pro-government candidates. The first round of voting was held last week.
The election took place amid a sweeping crackdown by the tiny island nation's Sunni rulers against Shiites accused of trying to destabilize the country. Bahrain's majority Shiites say they only seek greater rights.
