Spokesman slammed for IDF chief term extension claim

Defense Ministry officials leveled fierce criticism at IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Avi Benayahu on Tuesday night after it was revealed on Channel 1 that a one-year extension to IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi’s term was being considered due to the Iranian threat.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak called the report “baseless,” while other senior officials in the ministry said that although there was “great appreciation” for Ashkenazi, the issue of extending his term had never been discussed, and that Benayahu, whom they believed was the source of the information, had “cheapened” the post of chief of staff by issuing such a statement.
The IDF also said that no such discussion had taken place.
Ashkenazi was appointed in 2007 and is due to complete his term in 2011.
