Syrian envoys to Malaysia defect from Assad regime

Syrian diplomats in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur Consul Emad al-Ahmar and diplomatic attaché Mahmoud Obeid, announced their defection Friday, according to a report by Al Arabiya.
In an interview from Cairo, Ahmar said he would be joining the Syrian opposition due to President Bashar Assad's ongoing crackdown on civilians.
A number of other Syrian diplomats worldwide recently defected from the Syrian regime, including Syrian ambassador to Iraq Nawaf al-Fares, who in July became the first Syrian diplomat to defect.
He was followed by Syrian ambassador to Belarus Farouk Taha; Syrian ambassador to the UAE Abdul Latif al-Dabbagh; and Syrian ambassador to Cyprus Lamiaa al-Hariri. Other defections included Khaled al-Ayoubi, the Syrian envoy in London, and the Syrian diplomatic attaché in Serbia Bashar al-Haj.
