US official: Drone strike kills al-Qaida operations planner in Pakistan

Senior al-Qaida operations planner Saleh al-Somali was killed in a drone strike Tuesday in western Pakistan, a US government official said Sunday. Somali was responsible for the terror groups' operations outside the Afghanistan-Pakistan region, reaching into activities in Africa. The official said Somali has likely been involved in plotting attacks against the United States and Europe. Officials had reported the drone attack earlier this week, and said a top leader was killed, but only now are releasing his identity. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss covert operations.
