Israeli health-tech company GistMD is joining forces with the world-renowned Mayo Clinic to reshape patient communication through personalized, AI-powered video instructions—making complex medical information clear, accessible, and actionable.
GistMD has entered into a collaboration with Mayo Clinic to transform the way patients receive information about diagnoses, treatments, and post-discharge care.
The collaboration combines GistMD’s real-time AI video engine with Mayo Clinic’s clinical expertise to close critical communication gaps often caused by language barriers, low health literacy, and confusion after hospital discharge.
The GistMD platform extracts key data from the patient’s electronic health record—such as procedure codes, co-morbidities, age, language preference, and cultural background—and then instantly generates a personalized animated video narrated by a clinician avatar. These videos can be shared via text message, email, WhatsApp, or QR code—delivered at the bedside, during a clinic visit, or after discharge. The result: dense printed instructions are replaced with short, engaging, and easy-to-understand visual guidance.
“Our technology gives patients the simplest explanations about their condition and encourages them to take an active role in managing their health,” said Dan Rolls, GistMD’s founder and CEO.
The initial focus of the collaboration will be on cardiac procedures, where medication adherence, patient engagement, and early rehabilitation play a vital role in successful recovery. Pending clinical validation, the program is expected to expand into surgical recovery, chronic-disease management, and preventative care.
Rolls emphasized the platform’s adaptability: “The ability to personalize content based on language and cultural context allows us to reach diverse patient populations in both the United States and Israel.”
Founded in Tel Aviv, GistMD recently earned a “Best of DDW 2024” award after a pilot study showed its colonoscopy prep video modules cut inadequate bowel preparation rates in half—reducing repeat procedures and saving valuable clinical time.
Over the next year, GistMD and Mayo Clinic will assess patient outcomes, engagement levels, readmission rates, and potential cost savings. If results meet expectations, the program will expand across Mayo campuses, with licensing opportunities to additional health systems.
Disclosure: Mayo Clinic has a financial interest in the technology referenced in this article. Any revenue it receives will be used to support its not-for-profit mission in patient care, education, and research.
