The world of modular smartphones has seen many promises over the years, most of which ended in graveyards of forgotten accessories. Tecno is trying to bring the idea back to center stage with a new and intriguing concept. The most impressive point of the device is its starting point: A thickness of just 4.9 mm – a figure that makes it thinner than a standard pencil and even the new iPhone Air.

The inherent problem with modular devices has always been bulkiness. When components are added, the device becomes cumbersome. Tecno solved this by starting with an exceptionally thin base; even when attaching an external battery module (Power Bank) to the device, its total thickness remains similar to that of a standard modern smartphone. The system is based on new connectivity technology that combines magnets for physical attachment and pin connectors for transmitting electrical power.

Tecno’s vision is a device that “grows” with the user. To this end, the company has already presented ten different modules, including interchangeable camera lenses and a dedicated game controller. Data transfer between the device and the accessories occurs wirelessly, with the system able to switch between Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mmWave connectivity depending on the user’s location and technical needs.

Despite the polished look, available in silver-aluminum or gray finishes, it is important to remember that at this stage, it is only a concept model. However, Tecno’s history shows that it is not afraid to bet on unconventional technologies. In the past, the company has presented foldable devices at accessible prices, cameras with “pop-out” lenses for portraits, and round external displays.

The history of the field is full of spectacular failures. Google’s Ara project remained on the drawing board over a decade ago, and LG’s attempts with the G5 in 2016 or Motorola’s modular series failed to capture the market. Tecno hopes that this time, thanks to extreme miniaturization and friendly magnetic attachment, modularity will move from science fiction to a tangible consumer product.
