One of Israel’s greatest strengths is its ability to innovate. Here is D’’ash’s list of Israel’s coolest innovations ever!
1. Project better place. They invented the first ever, completely electric vehicle with no tail pipe emissions. This will soon be the center of mainstream personal transportation. Go green vehicles!
2. USB flashdrive. The flash memory data storage device with a USB interface was developed and manufactured by the Israeli company M-Systems.
3. ICQ. The first ever instant messaging device, which paved the way for AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) and later programs such as iChat and Skype.
4. Cherry tomatoes. This adorable and delicious vegetable was invented at the Agricultural Faculty of the Hebrew University in Rehovot.
5. Solar water heating. A home facility which converts solar energy to thermal energy. Israeli law now requires the installation of solar water heaters in all new homes.
6. Rummikub. A tile based game for two to four players was invented by an Israeli. Try it!
7. The emergency bandage. Also known as the Israeli bandage, it is a specially designed, first aid device that is used to stop bleeding from hemorrhagic wounds caused by traumatic injuries in pre-hospital emergency situations. It first saved lives during a NATO peacekeeping operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
These bandages were nicknamed “Israeli bandages,” and have been the bandages of choice for the US Army and special forces ever since.
8. No more animal testing! A computer model was created that allows the scanning of a living cell to see how it is affected by certain things. Using this machine will stop testing on animals completely!
9. Rewalk. An invention made by Argo Medical Technologies stimulates the limb movement sensors that stimulate walking, allowing paralyzed people the chance to walk again. D’’ash readers may remember when Artie received it as a gift on Glee!
10. 3D entertainment without the use of special 3D glasses. An Israeli start-up called 3DTV made it possible to watch 3D movies or television shows without using glasses. The software they have invented can also convert 2D movies into 3D Top Ten Innovations.
