Concern grew Tuesday night that rocket fire would increase against the western Negev after a member of the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip.The IDF said that the Air Force bombed a cell of terrorists which had moments earlier fired two mortar shells into Israel during a gunfight with Israeli soldiers along the border opposite the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis.RELATED:New type of rocket launched from Gaza in recent fightingHome Front Command warns of looming multi-front warOn Monday, two Kassam rockets were fired into Israel.The PRC said its men battled Israeli troops who crossed the border near Khan Younis and that one gunman died in an air strike.
Hospital officials said two Palestinian civilians, a father and son, suffered shrapnel wounds in the incident. Palestinian media identified the dead Palestinian as Khaled Samhud, 23, who commanded over PRC’s rocket unit.Israel killed a number of senior PRC operatives, including the head of the military wing, on August 18 in retaliation to the series of attacks near Eilat which killed eight Israelis. Israel has accused the PRC of carrying out the attacks.During ensuing violence, over 160 rockets were fired into Israel. Reuters contributed to this report.
