The European Union approved the appointment of Yitzik Crombie to the National Team of Higher Education Reform Experts (HERE) on Wednesday, the first haredi (ultra-Orthodox) representative on the forum.
HERE operates under the Erasmus+ program and aims to strengthen the connection between academia and the evolving labor market.
The team of experts promotes modernization in higher education systems by developing teaching methods and integrating tools to equip students with the skills required in today’s job market. The activities are carried out in both Israel and European Union countries to align academic degrees with industry needs.
Crombie's appointment received the approval of the Education Minister and Chairman of the Council for Higher Education, Yoav Kisch, and the European Union Ambassador to Israel, Michael Mann. As part of his role, Crombie will join a group of nine international experts tasked with leading changes in the education system.
Crombie is a social and business entrepreneur and CEO of the MeGo project from the Kemach Foundation. His appointment is based on his experience promoting employment and innovation, and his work connecting education systems with employers.
European Union emphasizing academic cooperation with Israel
The move is part of a broader European Union initiative to tighten academic cooperation with Israel, with an emphasis on social diversity in international representation.
"I am grateful for the trust and the choice to represent Israel in this forum," Crombie said after his appointment was confirmed. "The combination of academia and the world of practice and employment is crucial for the future of the Israeli economy. I look forward to working together with my colleagues on the team and with the Council for Higher Education to implement innovative tools that will provide students with relevant skills."
