A 41-year-old woman who underwent in-vitro fertilization three days ago to produce a pregnancy at the private Assuta Medical Center in Tel Aviv is in serious condition, ventilated and anesthetized in the intensive care unit.

The hospital reported on Tuesday that the woman had undergone previous IVF treatments but that they had not been successful. This time, there were no unusual reactions and that her vital signs were normal. But a few minutes after the IVF, the nurse noted that the patient was not breathing. Medical staffers resuscitated her and managed to restore her vital signs.

The hospital said that the cause of the emergency situation were not clear, thus management ordered an internal investigation and informed the Health Ministry. Assuta noted that IVF is a common procedure, and that it was not aware of any other such case in the past. A woman undergoing IVF should not end up in intensive care, it said. The family were informed and given all necessary assistance, the hospital said.
