Twenty-eight inmates escaped from a prison in northern Belgium early Saturday after overpowering the guards, officials and media reports said.
Six of the fugitives were quickly recaptured, and police were using helicopters in the hunt for the others, said Christian Du Four, a spokesman for the district attorney's office in the town of Termonde, according to the Belga news agency.
The inmates escaped from the prison at Termonde, located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of Brussels, after two of them seized three guards and stole their keys. They then released the other prisoners, scaled the outside walls of the compound and fled into the surrounding countryside.
No one was hurt in the jail break, Du Four said.
