Police arrested the suspected shooter after a person was shot dead and another wounded outside a student housing complex at the University of New Mexico on Friday.
While one of the victims perished during the attack, the other victim's condition is understood not to be life-threatening, according to the university.
Campus police arrived at the Casas del Rio housing center to find two people with gunshot wounds at around 3:30 a.m.
Suspected shooter arrested
Police located the suspect at an apartment complex in Los Lunas, New Mexico, about 25 south of Albuquerque, the Valencia County Sheriff's Office confirmed.
"Waking this morning to the news of this act of violence has shaken the entire UNM community," New Mexico State Rep. Marianna Anaya said in a statement. "It is especially heartbreaking that this occurred during the time of a new student orientation -- a time when students and their families should be filled with hope, excitement, and a sense of possibility.
"This heartbreaking incident is yet another reminder of the urgent need to address gun violence and historical trauma in our state."
