A commuter train derailed on Tuesday after a containment wall fell on the track due to heavy rain near the Spanish city of Barcelona, killing the driver and injuring around 20 people, a source at the Catalonia regional government and several local media outlets said.

The accident occurred just two days after a high-speed train collision and derailment near Adamuz in the southern Córdoba province that killed 42 people.

Twenty ambulances have been dispatched to the site in Gelida, on the outskirts of Barcelona, along with 38 firefighter units, authorities said.

The suburban train derailment occurred in a region long plagued by underfunded rail services and frequent incidents.

In a separate incident on Tuesday night, traffic between Blanes and Maçanet-Massane,s south of the city of Girona - also part of the Barcelona commuter rail network - was interrupted "due to a train axle coming off the track," Spanish rail operator Adif said in a statement on X.

Six-year-old girl is family's sole survivor of Spanish train crash

The tragedy of Sunday's high-speed crash left 42 victims. Among them were the parents, brother, and cousin of a six-year-old girl who was found walking alone along the tracks. She had been on a family outing to see the Lion King musical in Madrid.

The girl, who has not been officially named, suffered only a minor head wound. The family had been returning home to Aljaraque, on the Atlantic coast near Huelva, according to Spanish media.

The trip to the musical had been a gift for the feast of Epiphany, which Spain celebrates alongside Christmas. The family also visited Real Madrid's Bernabeu Stadium, according to regional broadcaster Canal Sur.
