Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Iran's opposition leader Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi on Friday during a trip to Munich, Germany.
"Ukraine supports the Iranian people as they are fighting for their future; we also express our sympathy to all the victims of the Iranian regime," Zelensky said in a statement.
"During our conversation, we focused on the situation in Iran and the areas where the Iranian people need support. We discussed the importance of strengthening sanctions against the Iranian regime and any other dictatorial regimes," he disclosed.
Pahlavi has been a central figure in the current round of anti-regime protests in Iran, which began at the end of December, pushing for regime change and the establishment of a democratic government.
Zelensky points out Russia-Iran cooperation
In his statement, Zelensky also called out the Russian-Iranian cooperation agreements, which include the exchange of resources and the development of military equipment.
"We condemned the cooperation between Russia and Iran, in particular the supply of 'shaheds' [drones] by the Iranian regime to Russia and the granting of licenses for their production," Zelensky wrote.
The Russian army has been using the Iranian drones for the last couple of years, with the most recent models being developed in Russia instead of Iran.
The Iranians have also been developing weapons with Russia's help, with their existing ballistic missile arsenal being recently increased amid the threat of a potential US or Israeli strike, foreign reports have said.
Among other systems, Tehran possesses a missile series with ranges of about 2,000 kilometers that place all of Israel within reach, as well as a missile that carries an especially heavy warhead and is considered among the most accurate in Iran’s arsenal.
Since Operation Rising Lion, Iran has been working intensively to rehabilitate its ballistic missile arsenal on several fronts to ensure its capabilities in a future confrontation.
