Four people and four goats were killed in a 30-car accident on a highway in Pueblo, Colorado, after heavy winds and airborne dirt caused a “brownout” on Tuesday, according to a report from The Colorado Sun.
Approximately 29 people were injured in the pileup, which involved at least six semi-trucks and over 20 passenger vehicles and spilled over the guardrails of the Interstate 25 highway.
The fatalities occurred across four separate vehicles, and all injured individuals were transferred to local hospitals for medical treatment, The Colorado Sun stated.
More than 50 first responders from 23 different agencies reportedly responded to the scene.
A trailer transporting 32 goats was involved in the crash, according to The Colorado Sun, and the 28 that survived were safely removed from the area of the pileup.
Severe weather conditions caused decreased visibility on I-25
Colorado State Patrol stated that due to the weather conditions, there was “little to no visibility” for drivers on the road at the time the crash occurred.
In a media briefing following the crash, Colorado State Patrol Maj. Brian Lyons described the crash-causing conditions as “one of those storms that came through and the wind picked up very quickly.”
The United States National Weather Service’s Pueblo Office issued a high wind warning, stating that gusts in the area could reach from 30-40 mph up to 65 mph.
