Suspected separatist rebels set off a bomb outside a shop in India's remote northeast, killing one person and wounding 17 others, ending a five-week lull in violence, police said Friday.
The explosion late Thursday came hours after the main rebel group in the state of Assam issued a statement saying they were interested in returning to peaceful negotiations with the Indian government.
"A powerful explosion occurred outside a shop in the eastern town of Kakopathar injuring 18 people, six of whom were family members of the shop owner. One of them later died in hospital," Bhaskar Mahanta, a senior police official, told The Associated Press.
