Brown meets Abbas in London

Talk focus on need to renew efforts towards lasting agreement with Israel.

LONDON - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown met with Palestinian Authority PresidentMahmoud Abbas on Friday, andsaid his government would continue to do everything to make progress toward alasting peace settlement.


The two leaders met for an hour and focused their discussions on the need torenew efforts towards a lasting peace agreement with .


Brown expressed continued support for the Arab Peace Initiativeas the framework for a just and comprehensive agreement.


They also discussed efforts to revitalize the Palestinian economy. Brownsaid he was “heartened by the positive and confident approach” being pursued byAbbas, who he said “continues to do so much to build peace in the region.”


A British spokesman said: “The prime minister made clear that the government willcontinue to do everything we can with both parties and our internationalpartners to deliver progress towards a lasting settlement.”


On Saturday, Abbas said he was considering a proposal to start indirect talks with Jerusalem.
