China says fate of Saddam up to the Iraq people

China, a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, had no comment Tuesday about the conviction and death sentence handed down to former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein for crimes against humanity. When asked about Sunday's sentence, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said at a news conference, "the fate of Saddam is up to the Iraqi people." China publicly opposed going to war against Iraq, but has taken a low profile since the war started.
