Death toll in Indian floods rises to 76

Rescuers recovered 46 more bodies overnight after waterways bloated by torrential rains washed away two buses in southern India, raising the death toll to 76, officials said Saturday. A total of 49 bodies have been recovered after one of the buses was swept away Friday by an overflowing jungle stream near Pattukkottai town, about 300 kilometers (190 miles) southwest of Madras, the capital of Tamil Nadu state, said district official M. Veerashanmughamonie. Workers also rescued 36 people who are being treated for injuries, Veerashanmughamonie said. "Bodies are still being washed ashore by the waters and the death toll could go up," he told The Associated Press on telephone.
