A powerful earthquake in northeastern Indonesia triggered a tsunami warning Tuesday and caused panicked residents to flee shaking buildings, officials and media reports said.
The US Geological Survey initially put the temblor's magnitude at 6.9, but later revised it to 6.5. The quake struck 210 kilometers from Ternate, the capital of Maluku island at a depth of 31 kilometers.
"We have called local authorities in Ternate and coastal areas to warn them of a potential tsunami," said Fauzi, a seismologist who goes by only one name.
