EU says US must close Guantanamo prison "anomaly"

Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik urged the United States on Wednesday to close a prison for terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay as soon as possible, saying the detention of suspects there creates a legal vacuum. Plassnik, speaking on behalf of the European Union, said the US naval base is seen as a "cause for concern" by EU member states, and called the prison an "anomaly." "The US government must take the measures to close the camp as soon as possible," said Plassnik, whose country holds the six-month rotating EU presidency. The issue of Guantanamo is likely to come up when US President George W. Bush visits Vienna on June 21 for an EU-US summit.
