Fighting broke out early Saturday in volatile eastern Chad between rebels and the country's national army, according to radio reports.
The fighting in Abeche, about 885 kilometers (550 miles) east of the capital, N'djamena, sent residents fleeing for cover and humanitarian workers were told not to leave their homes. The rebels announced that they had seized the city, but the government denied it.
Communications to Abeche were cut soon after the fighting broke out; further details were not immediately available.
