A German state that last year became the first to prohibit Muslim teachers from wearing headscarves in public schools wants to extend the ban to preschool teachers, a lawmaker said Wednesday. The conservative Christian Democrats, who govern the southwestern state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, are preparing legislation to extend the existing law, state legislator Stefan Mappus said. "We want a legal solution as quickly as possible," Mappus said. About two-fifths of the preschools in Baden-Wuerttemberg are run by the state, while the others are in the hands of religious or private organizations. Only teachers in state-run preschools would be affected by the ban.
