Military: Sri Lankan jets shoot down rebel plane

he Sri Lankan military said that its fighter jets have shot down a small plane used by the Tamil Tiger rebels' nascent air force. The destruction of the plane would be a major morale boost for the military. The rebels have frustrated the military with numerous attacks by their small fleet of aircraft. The military has never before been able to shoot down one of the planes. Air Force spokesman Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara said that he rebel aircraft tried to attack a government airbase early Tuesday morning when it was driven off by anti-aircraft fire. Air force jets then attacked the plan and shot it down over rebel-controlled territory.
