Obama: US will use diplomacy in Afghanistan

The United States will seek a more comprehensive, diplomatic approach to dealing with the war in Afghanistan, US President Barack Obama said on Tuesday, hours before signing off on an increase in US forces there. In advance of his first foreign trip, Obama said that the problems of Afghanistan, including the Taliban fighters and the spread of extremism, cannot be solved by military means alone. "We're going to have to use diplomacy, we're going to have to use development," Obama said. The Obama administration is expected to announce by Wednesday that it will send one additional Army brigade and an unknown number of US Marines to the war-torn country in coming months.
