Pakistan's leaders promised more legislation on Tuesday to protect the rights of women, after the country's president signed an amendment to an Islamic rape law to make it easier to prosecute sexual assaults.
"We will make more laws for the protection of women," Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz told a women's conference in the capital, Islamabad.
He rejected claims from Muslim hard-liners that the amendments to the rape law were against Islam.
Women and human rights activists have welcomed the changes, approved by Parliament last month and signed into law by President Gen. Pervez Musharraf last Friday.
