Peru bridge collapses, killing 8 and injuring 70

Officials said a foot bridge in Peru's highlands has collapsed, sending dozens of children and teachers from a nearby school plunging more than 70 meters into a ravine and killing at least eight people. Authorities in Ayacucho province say nearly 80 people were crossing the bridge made of wood planks strung on steel cables when it gave way on Monday. They fell onto a dry riverbed in Cora Cora region, 485 kilometers southeast of Lima. Two teachers and six schoolchildren died. Ayacucho health director Maria Torrealba told Canal N television that 70 people were hurt, 33 of them with serious head injuries. Ayacucho Gov. Ernesto Molina said rescuers were still working to evacuate 30 children from the ravine.
