At least 11 people were feared dead after a shell hit a busy marketplace in conflict-ridden northern Yemen, security officials said Thursday.
The shell struck Wednesday night in Wadi Alaf, some three kilometers (1.9 miles) from Saada, the stronghold of Shiite rebels who are fighting troops from Yemen's Sunni-dominated government, reported the officials.
At least 19 others were injured by the shell, 9 of them seriously, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to speak to the media.
The officials did not specify how the shell was fired, but local tribesmen, also speaking on condition of anonymity because they were afraid of being identified, said the shell might have been inadvertently launched from an army artillery position.
