Sri Lanka: 2 soldiers die in Tamil rebel attack

Tamil Tiger rebels ambushed a group of Sri Lankan soldiers killing two of them and wounding 12 others, the Defense Ministry said Monday. Lt. Col. Upali Rajapakse, a senior officer at the military's information center, said a firefight ensued following the ambush in eastern Batticaloa late Sunday. "After we were attacked, our troops retaliated and we believe that the terrorists suffered heavy casualties," said Rajapakse. The rebels are fighting to create a separate homeland in Sri Lanka's north and northeast for minority ethnic Tamils.
