United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon "strongly urged" the Iraqi government to halt upcoming executions, after the December 30 hanging of toppled dictator Saddam Hussein.
According to a statement issued from UN headquarters in New York, a letter to Iraq's permanent representative to the United Nations repeated Ban's call for "restraint by the government of Iraq in the execution of death sentences imposed by the Iraqi High Tribunal."
