US Ambassador: Release Olympic protesters

The US Ambassador to China is pressing Beijing to immediately release eight Americans who were detained for holding protests during the Olympics. Ambassador Clark T. Randt Jr. says the Chinese government should demonstrate respect for human rights and free speech and that US officials are "disappointed that China has not used the occasion of the Olympics to demonstrate greater tolerance and openness." Randt's Sunday statement says consular officials have met with eight Americans who were detained last week by Chinese authorities after staging pro-Tibet protests in Beijing. Chinese authorities have said the Americans will be released after 10 days detention. Randt said the detainees have not claimed any maltreatment at the hands of Chinese officials.
