Tens of thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets of Caracas on Saturday, with some lying down to protest the government's response to crime and rivals marching to call for peace while backing President Hugo Chavez.
Thousands of government opponents filled a main avenue in a wealthy eastern neighborhood of the capital, lying down on the pavement in a protest that organizers said was meant to call attention to violent crime.
Many of those who lay down in the street said not enough has been done about crime. "We want to live without fear, to go out in the streets without being afraid," said Yenny Diaz, a 21-year-old student.
