Iran denies it will provide Syria with arms

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini denied that his country had promised Syria $1b for new weapons if attempts to make peace with Israel were halted, Iranian news agency, Mehr, reported on Sunday. According to a report released Saturday by the pan-Arabic daily, Asharq Alawsat , Teheran would provide Damascus with new fighter jets, tanks and antiship missiles, and would aid Syria's nuclear and chemical weapons research programs. "These reports are aimed at destroying the strong relations between Syria and Iran," Hosseini said at a weekly press conference.
