Rice: Don't pass up Iran offer to halt enrichment

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said overnight Tuesday that it would be a "big mistake" to pass up Iran's offer to halt uranium enrichment, Army Radio reported. According to Rice, pressure must be increased on the Iranian government so it answers the demands of the international community. Regarding remarks by International Atomic Energy Agency chairman Muhammad ElBaradei, who said last week that it was necessary to reach a compromise with Iran over its nuclear program, Rice said that such a policy would not bring about results. Rice also pointed out that the final decisions on the subject lay in the hands of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany, and not in the hands of the IAEA.
