Gantz slams Netanyahu on memorial day for Begin

At a special Likud Knesset meeting in memory of former prime minister Menachem Begin, Blue and White Party leader Benny Gantz attacked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after the prime minister said on Monday that “the education portfolio will remain in the party's hands if Likud form the next government.” The meeting took place at the Menachem Begin Heritage Center in Jerusalem. Netanyahu added that by retaining the education portfolio the Likud would “confer Zionism and excellence." However, following Netanyahu’s comments, Blue and White leader Benny Gantz later attacked the prime minister on Facebook saying that "Begin would have ousted Netanyahu from the Likud.” “The Begin legacy is about cohesive leadership - not a regime of incitement and subversion," Gantz wrote. “We are now marking 27 years since Menachem Begin died and 40 years since the signing of the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt, which Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat signed. “As a young soldier I was privileged to secure Sadat's convoy in Israel, in the days that gave hope to an entire generation,” he went on to write. “But we must tell the truth - Menachem Begin would not have been accepted in Netanyahu's Likud party. “He would have been considered a troublemaker of Israel. What would Netanyahu's false incitement videos look like to Menachem Begin today?” he questioned, adding that “Begin was an Israeli patriot,” who was “a humble right-winger who was disgusted by Kahane, who defended democracy, who maintained security and sought peace.”
