An off-duty IDF soldier opened fire on a Palestinian suspected of entering Israel illegally near the opening of a tunnel on Route 60, south of Jerusalem, on Thursday, wounding one person, Border Police said.

The shooting happened as Jerusalem area Border Police were acting to detain several individuals who entered Israel illegally during an operation in the area.

The soldier saw the arrests in progress while traveling on a public bus, believed it was a security incident, and got off the bus to fire at the suspects.

Border Police kill wanted suspects after apparent surrender

Earlier on Thursday, the IDF and the Israeli police said that they would investigate an incident in which Border Police shot at two wanted Palestinian terrorists after they appeared to surrender during operations in Jenin.

Border Police stated that they identified the building in which the terrorists were hiding and initiated an hours-long attempt to convince the two men to exit the building. When the terrorists refused to exit, Israeli forces used a backhoe to partially open the building's garage door.

This incident came as Border Police personnel were operating in the Jenin area of the northern West Bank, with Israeli Air Force combat helicopters providing support to Commando Brigade forces on the ground, on Thursday afternoon.
