Chief Rabbi: We must do all in our power to help the Kurdish people

Chief Rabbi of Israel Rabbi David Lau told President Reuven Rivlin during his annual Sukkot holiday visit to Lau's succah that Israel must do everything in its power to prevent the destruction of the Kurdish people, who are currently being targeted by a Turkish offensive in Syria aimed at clearing out a 'safe-zone' for Syrian refugees. During the visit to the chief rabbi's house, Lau reminded Rivlin of the importance of Sukkot, being a holiday of unity and peace not only in Israel, but also around the world. The chief rabbi added that our hearts are with the Kurdish people, who are facing the 'danger of mass destruction.' The rabbi said that it is Israel's moral duty to act on this matter immediately before it is too late for the Kurdish people. Rivlin expressed his joy at upholding the annual tradition of the presidential visit to the chief rabbi's succah, during the holiday and the wonderful explanation of the meaning of Sukkot. While the president did not comment on the Kurdish plight, he mentioned that in these difficult times, we say 'Spread over us Your shelter of peace' in the Jewish evening prayers every day. The current task at hand is the establishment of this 'shelter of peace' so that all the tribes of Israel can live among one another within the State of Israel.
