“It’s been a tough entry into the new year with the loss of the great Amos Oz, whom I love dearly,” Portman wrote. “But in his honor, I’m starting a reading circle, beginning with the last novel he published: JUDAS. Please let me know what you think.”Judas, which was published in Hebrew in 2014 and English in 2016, is set in 1959 Jerusalem and features a young man who takes a job as a companion to a brilliant old man. The book was shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize in 2017.Portman got to know Oz personally after she adapted his 2002 memoir, A Tale of Love and Darkness, into a feature film. The film – which was directed by and starred Portman – was shot in Jerusalem and released in 2015.“My heart is broken,” Portman wrote upon hearing of Oz’s death late last month. “Today we lost a soul, a mind, a heart, Amos Oz, who brought so much beauty, so much love, and a vision of peace to our lives. Please hold him in your hearts and read his gorgeous books. My most loving embrace to his family, who he loved extremely.”
